We left Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park on August 6 following US Highway 50 toward the town of Gunnison. Along the way, we passed the beautiful Blue Mesa Reservoir.
We settled into Williams Creek Campground near Lake City for a couple of nights. This national forest campground offered no hookups but lots of squirrels for Harley to tree.
It was a gorgeous day as we headed out on Engineer Pass, a high mountain jeep trail which connects Lake City and Ouray, two of our favorite Colorado towns. We have traversed this pass on several occasions but we never tire of the scenery.
The old Rose Lime Kiln, built in 1881, is one of the hundreds of remnants of bygone mining days.
Another beautiful Colorado waterfall.
Much of Engineer Pass follows a narrow, steep shelf road with sheer drop offs.
The road meanders through beautiful basins filled with wildflowers and trees before reaching the alpine tundra.
An old cabin beside the creek at Palmetto Gulch - another remnant of the past.
