Leaving Telluride on August 4, we headed for The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. After two nights there, we moved onto Lake City, one of our favorite little Colorado towns. A historic frontier town, Lake City lies at the heart of the most remote county in the contiguous US. There is more mountain wilderness here than any place in America. Surrounding the town are six peaks over 14,000 feet and many more over 13,000. The scenery here is spectacular. We have visited Lake City on a number of occasions, including a couple of snowmobile trips there.
We camped about 7 miles outside town at a forest service campground called Williams Creek. From there, we did a big circle tour traversing Engineer Pass toward Ouray then returning via Cinnamon Pass. It was a beautiful day and the scenery was just as spectacular as we remembered it. We will return again.
Tomorrow, it’s on to Nathrop.
Until next time, happy trails to you . . . til we meet again!
