The Geology Tour Road was an 18-mile dirt loop that started in the Mohave Desert and circled through Pleasant Valley into the Colorado Desert, which you see here.
A very common desert plant - the Ocotillo.

The creosote bush. This is the most common and oldest plant in the Mojave Desert.

Teddybear Cholla. These plants grow in clusters only at specific elevations and in areas that get desert water runoff. We saw a large group of these plants in the transition zone between the Mojave and Colorado Deserts.
The rust colored bottom portion of these Teddybear Chollas is a normal pattern and is not related to drought or disease. Notice the little yellow buds.
