As we neared Leadville, we were welcomed back by the incredible blue skies and lofty mountains.
The Old Malta Schoolhouse, just south of Leadville, is over 200 years old.
While we were in Leadville this time, we got to see part of the Leadville Trail 100 race, one hundred miles across the high-altitude, extreme terrain of the Colorado Rockies.  Created for only the most determined athletes, this event starts at 10,152 feet and climbs to 12,424 feet, challenging riders to catch their breath.
We decided to make a day trip, over Independence Pass, to Aspen.
State Highway 82 traverses the pass which is too narrow for Bubba to travel.
There are a number of small alpine lakes along the way.
Independence Pass reaches the highest elevation of any paved, through, Colorado state highway.  After Cottonwood Pass, to the south, it is the second-highest pass with an improved road in the state and the fourth-highest paved road in the state.  It is also the highest paved crossing of the Continental Divide in the U.S.
