Facts about Yellowstone:

It was the world's first national park.

Is is a designated World Heritage Site and designated Biosphere Reserve.

It measures 3,472 square miles, larger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined.

It covers 2,221,766 acres.

96 % of Yellowstone is in Wyoming, 3% is in Montana, and 1% is in Idaho.

The highest point in the park is 11,358 feet (Eagle Peak).

The lowest point in the park is 5,282 ft (Reese Creek).

Approximately 5% of park is covered by water; 15% is grassland; and 80% is forest.

Precipitation ranges from 10 inches at the north boundary to 80 inches in the southwest corner.

Temperatures (average) at Mammoth - January: 9° F; July: 80° F

Yellowstone sits atop an active volcano.

The park experiences from 1-3,000 earthquakes annually.

There are about 10,000 thermal features in the park, half of all thermal features in the world.  Over 300 of them are geysers that erupt periodically.
