Crossing into Virginia, we
headed for Front Royal where we would enter Shenandoah National Park. |
 |
If you've never been on the
Shenandoah Parkway, you have missed a real treat. Skyline Drive runs
105 miles north and south along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is
the only public road through the park. |
 |
With a speed limit of 35 mph,
one is forced to slow down and smell the roses. Looks like Jerry has
the back-up camera on - guess he wants to make sure that Pearl is still with
us! |
 |
Here, you can roll down your
windows, feel the breeze, and experience every curve and turn of this
beautiful drive. |
 |
There are 75 overlooks that
offer stunning views of the Shenandoah Valley to the west or the rolling
Piedmont to the east. The park purposely leaves the roadsides unmowed so
wildflowers put on a show all year long. |

We had some clouds and rain,
simply adding to the splendor of the area. We spent three wonderful
nights at Loft Mountain Campground (mile 79.5), the largest campground in
the park. It sits atop Big Flat Mountain with outstanding views to
east and west. Two waterfalls and trails into the Big Run Wilderness are
nearby. The temperatures, in the summer months, are heavenly. Our
campsite number was D88 and, although very unlevel, we managed. And,
while there were lots of bear warnings, and you had to swear on your
mother's grave that you would not leave any food out, we didn't encounter
any. Harley did have very close encounters with two baby deer and lots
of rabbits. We loved our time here and hope to return someday. |
