At one time Batopilas had a silver mine and a population of 10,000 people.  It was the second city in Mexico, after Mexico City, to get electricity.
Cesar explains how the Shepard family moved here from Washington, DC after buying the mine.
As you can see from this and the two preceeding pictures, the mine is long gone.  It closed in the early 1900's.
Cactus can grow anywhere, even atop a deserted building.
We were in Batopilas on Superbowl Sunday.  We found a local cantina willing to turn the television our way if we would buy his products.  The  only problem was the commentator spoke Spanish.
Back to the hotel for our farewell to Batopilas dinner with live Mexican music.
