The road, literally, hangs on the edge of the mountains and climbs and climbs and climbs.
Social Tunnel on Imogene Pass.
From Imogene Pass, you can see the switchbacks on Black Bear Pass in the distance. Black Bear Pass requires very "technical" 4-wheel-drive skills as it is one of the more difficult passes in the state. Jerry and I took this pass a number of years ago and both agree . . . we don't need to do it again. The switchbacks are so sharp that you sometimes have to stop and back up several times to make it around the corners. Not for me anymore!
Look closely and you can see Bridal Veil Falls to the right of Black Bear's switchbacks.
After the silver crash in 1893, prospectors struck gold at the Tomboy Mine and the mine bagan to produce handsomely. At its peak, the mining camp supported about 900 people. The Tomboy was sold for $2 million in 1897 and continued to operate until 1927.
The harsh winters continue to take their toll on Tomboy's remains.
Many of the foundations and some of the structures at Tomboy are still clearly evident.
